Russia has become one of the world’s most dynamic markets for a range of consumer goods and services. Its impressive growth in recent years has important implications for Canadian agri-food exporters. The Russian Government approved a US$41 billion program for the development of agriculture to increase Russia’s self-sufficiency in food, sustain rural development, increase rural employment, and improve rural living standards. Russian officials expect agricultural production to increase by 20% between 2008 and 2012 as a result of the program. As one of the targeted areas, meat production has created multiple opportunities for Canadian exporters of live animals and animal genetics.
