Dams of Destinction

Our futurity was once again successfully staged at the Maritime Fall Fair in Halifax in October
‘09 in spite of earlier attempts by the fair to drop the cattle show in its entirety. Unfortunately, it
took a great deal of effort on the part of exhibitors and timely government intervention to change
the stance of the Board. Plans are already under way for this year’s event to take place on
Thanksgiving weekend in Halifax.

If your travels take you to the east coast sometime over the next year, be sure to look up a breeder
in the area; we’d be delighted to share with you a taste of our Maritime hospitality.  While we
may be small in our numbers here in the Maritimes, we are big on the pride that we take in
raising and showing Charolais cattle.

September 26, it was the female Charolais sale at Bouffard Farm in Ayer’s Cliff in
Eastern Townships. The Bouffard family and the ACQ board worked hard to make this
event a large success. All directors were proud to see the Charolais members. On
November, 6 ACQ members went to the RAWF. The three day trip was enjoyed by all.
The Charolais show was very amazing. All Quebec travalers were impressed by the
quality of the top animals. We supported, Ranch Ostiguy, along with other Quebec
members who participated at the show. Congratulations to the Ostiguy family. Special
thanks to the Ontario breeders for their friendly welcome.

We continue to publish our ACQ vous informe brochure and l’Avantage Charolais revue
which advertises some of the best bull sales in Quebec. These publications give the
breeders the chance to promote their Charolais herd.

We would like to thank the Canadian Charolais Association for their support. Thank you
to all the breeders from Quebec for a good year and having participated in all the events.
A very very special thanks to our field man André Pérusse for his work all year, we
appreciate it very much. Finally, we’d like thank all the members on the Quebec board.

Our field rep, John Mielhausen, and local members manned a display booth at the
International Plowing Match in September in northern Ontario. Attendance at the IPM
was recorded at 82,000 visitors! The display was set up at a number of other venues
throughout the province, as well.

The breed was well represented at the Royal Winter Fair and other shows throughout the
province. Ontario Point Show results are available on the Canadian Charolais Association
website. A number of Ontario breeders took animals to Agribition last fall. Special
mention goes to our OCA secretary/treasurer Doris Aitken who received the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair Woman of Excellence Award.

The year culminated with the annual meeting, held March 13, 2010, in Guelph. Special
reports were presented by Candace Alexander, our Ontario youth rep on the National
CCYA board, Mike Ormiston, Royal Winter Fair beef committee member, and Neil
Gillies. Brian and Heather Coughlin, Cornerview Charolais, received the OCA
Recognition Award. The board of directors selected for the upcoming year is: President
Brian Coughlin, VP Gord Tomlinson, Secretary/Treasurer Doris Aitken, National
Director Brent Saunders, Keith Black, Andy Millar, Owen O’Neil, Mark Degurse, Ryan
Nesbitt, Chester Tupling, Brad Buchanan, and Kirby Hakkesteegt. A banquet, guest
speaker from Merial Canada and fundraising auction were held in conjunction with the
Ontario Limousin and Simmental associations.

Manitoba Livestock Expo held in Brandon kicks off the show season in early November.
Numbers were down this year due to the late harvest.  As always, Brandon’s great facilities, with
the barns connected to the hotel and waterslide, restaurant, and bar, make being at the show very
convenient.
In July, a few of our junior members went to Ontario for the Canadian Charolais Youth
Association Conference & Show.  Our juniors are currently working very hard to make CCYA
2010 to be held in Dauphin a huge success.  It is being held July 21-24, and registration forms
can be found on the Charolais Youth website, or in the May edition of the Charolais Banner.
Last June Manitoba hosted the CCA Annual General Meeting in Russell.  We toured four herds:
Everview Charolais, Hunter Charolais, Rolling D Charolais, and High Bluff Stock Farm.  We
golfed at Prairie Lake Lodge, checked out some local history at St. Elijah Parish and the Inglis
Elevators, both which are national historic sites. We had supper at Asessippi Ski Lodge and had
a few laughs from local entertainment, ‘The Missus’.  Our CCA meeting went very well, and we
finished up the event with a barn dance.
Throughout the year we run four issues of the Manitoba Charolais Bull-Etin for our members,
which are very well done by Cheryl McPherson.

The SCA board has been working hard to support and promote Charolais.  2010 brings
forth the 50th anniversary of Charolais in Canada and the 40th anniversary of Agribition
this Nov. in Regina. This combined with the Canadian National Charolais Show and Sale
should prove to be an exciting year.  We are working hard to make this National Show
and Sale a success and encourage all breeders to attend and participate however possible.
The fieldman position has been filled by Gerry Bowes and proved to have positive
results.  We are currently working on 2010-11 program.  The bull selection clinics
sponsored by Sask Ag and Food were filled to capacity and were positive.

Once again it been a great pleasure to work with the SCA board of directors and CCA.
We look forward to next year and the challenges that it will bring.

The Show and Sale committee had a very active year with the largest event being the 2nd
The Alberta Designate Show in Olds and the Charolais Show at Farmfair were
disappointing in terms of the number of cattle entered as well as breeders attending the
events.  More Alberta breeders will need to make displaying live cattle a priority if these
and many other events are going to continue to be successful in the province of Alberta.
On a positive note, the quality of the cattle exhibited at these shows was exceptional.
Many Alberta bred cattle displayed at Fall Harvest, Alberta Designate, and Farmfair later
went on to be class winners, division champions, and national champions at both the
Canadian and U.S. national shows.

Annual Fall Harvest Show and Sale held in Olds at the end of October.  The bull pen
show and herd bull displays were well received and the sale was very successful showing
an increase in the average and the total sale gross.  A highlight of the Fall Harvest
weekend was the banquet where we celebrated 50 years of Charolais in Canada.  Many
pioneers of the breed turned out for the celebration.  The ACA also gave out our annual
awards during the Fall Harvest weekend with McKeary Charolais receiving Breeder of
the Year, Wildor Farms as Commercial Breeder of the Year, Tim Bullick received
Booster of the Year, Rodney James was honored with the 2009 Pioneer Award, and Dan
Rawe accepted the Pioneer Award for his late father, James Rawe.
The ACA would like to thank the Charolais breeders of Alberta as well as enthusiasts
from across Canada for a successful 2009 and we look forward to making the Charolais
business all it can be in 2010.

It is also pleasing to report that the Association will post a positive financial picture for the 2009 year. The current board of directors have focused on the concept of living within our means, which as most folks would know is never as easy as it seems. Firstly, this has been achieved by steering as many members as possible away from the paper based system and on to our on-line registry system, which has resulted in a reduction of data entry personnel. Secondly, the administration has replaced full-time employees with consultants, contract personnel and part-time employees, which significantly lowers costs and makes for better utilization of a specific skill set when most needed. Currently the Association only employs two full time staff. Thirdly, the replacement of a full time field representative with several regional people has seen a considerable savings. The service fee funds these field representatives who now receive their direction from the provincial boards. And lastly the association has exited all research endeavors.
Reining in all of these expenditures has given the Association a more realistic chance of balancing the books on a consistent basis.
At the time of writing the Charolais Banner’s 2010 summary of bull sales is still in the development stage and will be published in the May edition of the Banner magazine. In conversation with Helge By and Craig Scott the best guess is that sale figures will see a slight improvement on last year’s reports. In my February 2010 Connection article I stated the following. My informed sources believe that the performance based terminal breeds such as Charolais will have “as good a go as any breed this year.” The sources are quick to point out that Charolais bull sales will not be a runaway, but sales should be as strong as any breed.
Based on information gleaned from different sources many of the other breed sales had lower sale averages and had a significant number of bulls not receiving bids. So when a comparison is made between breeds we stacked up as well as any.
Not to be overlooked is the news of a potentially huge order of Charolais males and females from the Russian Federation. Starting in the fall of 2010 when the first shipment is due to depart there is potential for upwards of 12,000 head to be exported over the next three years. This would be the most significant sale of Charolais females in over 10 years and will provide a substantial cash flow to many Charolais breeders. The 50th anniversary of the Charolais breed in Canada will be held in conjunction with the Canadian Association’s Annual General Meeting in Moose Jaw, SK on June 15th, 16th, 17th, 2010. It is being billed as a 50th Homecoming and the organizational committee is expecting a large turnout of founding members. My information is that Joyce Stewart, Doug Howe and their team are planning two nights of activities specifically focusing on the early years of Charolais in this country. I urge everyone to try and attend this activity as many memories will be shared by the founding members and it will provide an opportunity for newer Charolais members to learn about some of the challenges and excursions undertaken in the growing years.
So in closing as my old friend Jack Black from Bridge Lake, BC would say – Neil, things are starting to look up.
